Top 10 Reasons to Have Air Ducts Cleaned

This is actually an article I saved from www.Rotobrush.com issued last year in September.

I though it was interesting and so I'm sharing it with you through my blog.

Article:

90 % of homes have shown indoor air quality issues, and EPA ranks indoor air pollution as on of the top 5 health risk. In addition, there are 55 million allergy and asthma sufferers in the U.S. with growing concern about the air we breathe indoors, more and more homeowners and building managers are looking to make improvements by having air duct cleaning done.

People get their air duct cleaned for a variety of reasons, including the following:

1. Installation of a new high efficiency and cooling system-you don't want to blow dirt and debris through new coils.

2. Allergy and/or asthma symptoms are aggravated.

3. Pets dander accumulation.

4. Reduction of interior dust.

5. Ducts and furnace have been inactive for two or more years.

6. Rodent and other pest infiltration.

7. Microbial growth inside: mold, fungus, algae, bacteria, etc.

8. Odor from ducts and/or furnace.

9. A video inspection shows dirt and debris in ducts.

10. Routine maintenance to improve indoor air quality.

End of Article.

What is a green product?

A green product is one that won't harm you, your children, your pets, or the environment inside the house or outside where your waste goes. And it won't hang around like an unwanted guest after you use it.

We were taught to believe that clean smell nice, like lemon scent, pine or orange, but real clean doesn't smell and more importantly, clean can't hurt you in any way.

What about air fresheners?

All air fresheners and room deodorizers includes toxins have been shown to reduce lung functions and are possible carcinogens.

When you study each cleaning product and how these are made and its possible repercussions on health, it is an eye opening experience that leads you to make positive changes for you and those you hold dear.

If you are looking for green products here are some sites to check out:

www.statewidesupply.com, www.ecos.com, www.shaklee.com

I also recommend some good books I read on the subject of green and these are:

1) GREEN GOES WITH EVERYTHING by SLOAN BARNETT.

2) GO GREEN, LIVE RICH by DAVID BACH.

3) LIVING HEALTHY ON A TOXIC WORLD by DAVID STEINMAN and R MICHAEL WISNER.

Remember that the greatest asset a person has is his own mind and if we use it to learn and make smart choices is always a win-win situation.

I hope this information is useful to you and remember I want to listen to your thoughts, questions and ideas on green.

Walking lead into your home

My wife and I used to leave on an apartment and for years we knew carpets can be unhealthy, but kept walking into the house with our shiny shoes and despite frequent vacuuming that carpet never looked great.

Last year, we moved to a new bigger apartment and most of it, is covered by carpet. Except this time we told our self, lets change our policy and lets interact with our carpet in a much more friendly manner.

It really paid off, the carpet not only look pristine, but also feels healthy. We are not allergic or anything, but we don't need to be, in order to take preventive measures.

OK, up to this point, we were religiously keeping our part of the deal, but what do you do when you have visitors? It is rude to ask them to remove their shoes?

I didn't know, but keeping my household healthy was at stake here, so we tested it and ask all our friends to remove their shoes at the entrance and to my surprise, I had never received any opposition to it, nor detected the person feeling uncomfortable.

Whenever they asked, I'm eager to explain them my views about it and it goes smoothly.

The other challenge is when maintenance people came to repair something, but we gave them disposable shoes and voila!

The truth is, my wife and I like clean, but what we don't like is an unhealthy environment and we know that when you are in the street, your lovely shoes pick up all kind of particles and one of them is lead.

There is a book that I read called: " Living Healthy In A Toxic World" written by David Steinman and R. Michael Wisner and on its glossary defines lead as follows:

Lead: Heavy metal used in batteries, pipes, solder, paints, and gasoline manufacture. Primary human exposures: drinking water leached from plumbing, air vehicle exaust, smog, and dust from lead-based paints. Accumulates in body, and damages brain and nervous system. Causes lowered IQ, stomach disorders, fatigue, and behavioral problems.

Wow!, that bad,eh?

As usual to fulfil my curiosity I did research and learned that you also walk it into your house through your shoes and that's how all started.

The health and IQ has to be one of the biggest assets on any body's life, without health, you are very limited and without IQ, you are just a fat head!

Maybe the Japaneses, already knew? They had been taking their shoes off since long ago, pretty smart!

If you want to learn more about lead and its effect on health, I recommend to go to www.epa.gov/lead , you can even download materiel in PDF.

I hope this helps and look forward hearing your comments.

Clean for health first

As the Vice President of a janitorial company, I personally do a lot of research in the subject of green cleaning and cleaning in general and it is very interesting because I not only learn new methods available for better performance, but also I see there is a lot of false information spread around about cleaning, chemicals, fragrances, etc.

The first thing I want to convey is that cleaning is the contrary to polluting, so why would you use chemicals that are harmful to health to clean your office or your house?.Is one of those things that doesn't make sense at all, right?

This is similar to what happens with alimentary products, where years later we find out that the fries we love so much are cooked with unhealthy oils or something of that sort. Except that food at least go through an approval process on its effect on us humans and even that is not a guarantee, as we later hear about it on the news.
As we don't eat or drink the chemicals we use to clean, there is not such regulations and some of the chemicals can be really damaging to health.

We were educated to believe that clean smells good, when clean doesn't smell at all. The shelves at your favor stores still have 10 harmful products and maybe one or two green products, so as a society, we are still creating unhealthy indoors environments and it would be very nice to start changing it for the better of our families, friends and visitors, don't you think?

With this blog, I want to share with you tips, new information, reveal false information and help you improve your standard of living by reducing exposure to toxics.

I'm not a doctor or a scientist, as I share information with you, I'll quote the source of the information so you can study it further if you like. Following or not my tips or advice is up to you, I want us to think freely and learn together better ways.

Thank you,
